Established in 1988, the ExtraCare Charitable Trust was completely focussed on older people, especially those disadvantaged due to poverty, ill health, disability and isolation. Services have been delivered in a range of accommodation, initially sheltered housing, residential, nursing homes and community centres.
In 1995 ExtraCare housing was pioneered and developed with a view to eventually replacing the more traditional and restrictive forms of accommodation for older people. This idea has rapidly gained acceptance and the charity has now developed ten larger village schemes during the last decade, with a further three in construction.
Over the course of the last 15 years ExtraCare has been in part responsible for pioneering a new approach to later life. Rather than view older people as a problem, a financial burden and in need of a 'place to die', ExtraCare has seen a new optimism emerging where later life can be seen as the 'time of your life'
We were delighted to be asked to create the Smile Appeal website. The Smile Appeal aims to raise £10 million to build five ExtraCare Villages. These will, in part, address the growing needs of the City’s elderly population – people who in the past have contributed considerably to the economic prosperity we now enjoy and until recently took for granted. These Villages however, will serve a second purpose; they will bring much needed regeneration to the localities they are situated in, by providing a wealth of community facilities for all generations.
